Kongens Mose

- sub-project no. 10

Kongens mose web

Kongens Mose is located in Tønder Municipality just south of Løgumkloster. The bog is part of a beautiful natural area of almost 800 ha. The project includes approx. 120 ha of private land. As in many other bogs, traces of previous peat digging are still visible, in Kongens Mose the digging was very intensive during World War II. Parts of the bog have even been tried to be cultivated during the First World War. Today there are approximately. 16 ha of active raised bog nature left. The project seeks to create coherence between the existing raised bog areas, by creating conditions for the development of active raised bogs of approx. 75 ha. In addition, approx. 2 ha of existing raised bog in the project area is secured.

The project must be seen as a continuation of previous restoration activities in 1995 and 2008, where raised bog was restored on the state lands to the west and north. In this project, trees and bushes must first be cleared. The next step is to raise and stabilize the water level, to limit the regrowth of the trees and to create the conditions for the peat mosses to quickly and naturally settle in. Peat bogs are a prerequisite for the development of active raised bogs.
In connection with the project, it is planned to carry out land distribution, with the aim of creating the prerequisites for being able to enter into agreements with the plot owners on the completion of the project.

The objective is

  • To develop active raised bog on 75 ha, which today is degraded raised bog or forested peat bog
  • Clearing approx. 30 ha of trees and bushes
  • To increase the water level of 119 ha by closing approx. 3 km of ditches
  • To carry out monitoring of water levels, vegetation and rare species
  • To strengthen the dissemination of the nature of the bog

Kongens Mose shall be high raised bog again

A raised bog is a very special nature type, which has gradually become very rare. Kongens Mose at Draved Skov used to be raised bog, but for many years a large part of the area was drained and cultivated, and peat was dug, so the raised bog almost disappeared. Now Tønder Municipality is in the process of restoring the raised bog – thanks to benevolent landowners and EU funds.
