Rold Skov

- sub-project no. 7 and 8

Rold Forest is rich in deposits of raised bogs, which are formed in moist depressions and old lakes. Many of the bogs have been either drained or planted over time, and therefore lie today as degraded and forested peat bogs. As part of the LIFE project, conditions are being improved in 5 of the bogs, a total of 34 ha. The project is implemented in Rebild and Mariagerfjord municipalities.

The most important activities are the clearing of unwanted growth, primarily birch and various species of conifers, as well as raising the water level. The trees are removed because they shade the growth of sphagnum and other tall bog plants, just as they contribute to increased evaporation and thus drying out of the bogs. The raised water level should mean that sphagnum can once again thrive and grow in the bogs, while at the same time it will limit new growth of birch and conifers in particular. In the long term, typical high bog species such as cranberry, round-leaved sundew, bog bull and narrow-leaved sedge are also expected to be favored by the wetter conditions.

In addition, the project must create better habitats for Bred Vandkalv, an endangered species that is partly the basis for the designation of Rold Skov. The species lives in clean forest lakes, and the project focuses on improving the habitats for the Broad Water Calf.
